Getting braces is exciting for most pre-teens and teenagers that want to make their smiles look their best-and with the amount of money that orthodontics cost, you want to make sure that you child is taking care of their teeth and appliances, too. Most kids can expect to wear their braces for at least twelve to eighteen months, and some much longer. After you get braces, your orthodontist will go over basic dental hygiene with you. When you follow these guidelines, you can make sure you are taking proper care of your teeth. Here are some important tips for keeping your orthodontic work clean.

Brushing: You can never brush too many times when you have orthodontic work. You might just have spacers, retainers, or a full set of braces. Whatever you have, you have to make sure you are brushing after every time you eat. Braces and other orthodontic work are food traps. When you eat, you can be sure that some of the food will get stuck. Without proper brushing, those food particles can cause tooth decay and swollen and sore gums. You might even want to consider using a special fluoride rinse that you can use in addition to brushing. There are even special toothbrushes that work very well with braces.

Flossing: Yes, you do have to floss when you have braces. Many people mistakenly think that since they can't get the floss in between their teeth, that they no longer have to floss. This is not true and without flossing you can get a lot of food left in between your teeth. The best way to floss with braces is to use a special tool called a "proxabrush". These little brushes look similar to a mini-bottle brush. These are made especially for cleaning down in between braces. It is recommended that you use this flossing technique every time you brush.

Regular Dental Check Ups: When you have orthodontic work, you will be visiting your orthodontist on a regular basis, usually once a month. You should remember that these do not take the place of your regular dental check ups with your dentist. You will still need to visit your dentist for cleanings, x-rays and check ups twice a year. Your orthodontist will not be able to detect small cavities; your dentist must do this.

Eating the Right Foods: When you have braces, your wires and brackets can break quite easily. Therefore, you should be aware of the foods you eat while you have braces. Your orthodontist will recommend that you stay away from hard foods that can break or damage your orthodontic work such as hard crackers, pretzels, hard pizza crusts and stick foods like caramel and bubble gum (although some orthodontist will tell you that sugar free gum is okay). If you like eating fresh fruit such as apples, you should slice them in bite-sized pieces before eating.

Braces are made to make your teeth nice and straight. You will want to make sure you are taking the proper steps to care for your teeth and your orthodontic work.

You suspect that you may have gum disease. You have done the responsible thing and made a dentist appointment. The dreaded day has arrived and you wonder what to expect at the visit. Knowing in advance what may happen during this visit may put your mind at ease.

Your smile tells people a lot about who you are. A big confident smile lets people know that you are happy and feel good inside. However, no matter how confident you feel inside, a stained smile may give off the wrong idea about you. Your teeth is often the first thing people notice about you and you want to make sure that your teeth are white and give a lasting impression.

For many people, teeth whitening is a good choice for bringing their smile back to where they feel good about their teeth. Teeth whitening can lighten the effects caused by smoking, and drinking beverages such as red wine, tea, coffee and caffeineated sodas. There are many options when it comes to whitening your teeth. Here are some of your options.

Bleaching: Bleaching is a popular option for teeth whitening because it usually has good results and is cheaper than other methods. You can purchase over the counter bleaching treatments, or have your dentist perform the procedure. In general, you can expect to pay around $100-$500 for home bleaching treatments and up to $2000 for bleaching treatments that are performed by your dentist. These treatments work well on common stains caused by smoking, food and beverages.

Strips and toothpastes: There are many products that are available at your local drugstore to help whiten your teeth. These products range from gels, to strips to toothpastes. Toothpastes that contain hydrogen peroxide can usually lighten your teeth one shade if you use it over a sustained period of time. Gels and strips also help whiten your teeth. They do lighten your teeth one to two shades and the results usually last about four months. These options are much cheaper than professional procedures. You can expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $50 for at home treatments. If you are looking for an inexpensive, quick-fix, then this could be the right option for you.

Laser Treatments: Laser teeth whitening procedures offer good results, but these procedures are quite pricey. While you can expect laser whitening to lighten your teeth about four shades, you should expect to pay anywhere from $2000 to $4000 for this procedure. When you have laser treatment, you will spend about one hour in the dentist chair. If you really want a white smile and have the money to spend, this is a good option for you.

In general, you should be aware that you cannot expect miracles with any tooth whitening system. Some will yield better results than others. If you have unrealistic expectations, you will be disappointed. People with extensive cosmetic work such as crowns, bridges, veneers and implants should not have teeth whitening. This work will not lighten and may cause uneven results. Also, if you are pregnant, you will not want to have any in office treatments during your pregnancy. In addition, if you are a smoker and still plan on smoking after your treatment, you cannot expect lasting results. If you have questions whether teeth whitening is right for you, then you should consult your dentist.

All About Tooth Decay

December 28th, 2008

In order for tooth decay to be developed in a tooth, that tooth must have acid producing bacteria around it, along with food for the bacteria to feed upon. Teeth that are susceptible to decay will have little to no fluoride in the enamel to fight the plaque. Fluoride can destroy decay, although it won’t be able to do much once the decay has started to eat the teeth.

A Look At Fillings

December 28th, 2008

Fillings are very common with dental work, as they present a way to repair a tooth that has suffered from decay or a cavity back to it’s original shape. When performing a filling, the dentist will remove the decayed area of the tooth, clean around it, then fill in the area that he has removed with a special material that will cater to the shape and form of the tooth.

Periodontal disease is where there is infection that began in the gingival tissue (your gum line) and then due to nontreatment it spread to under the gums and then into the surrounding bone structure that surrounds the tooth.
